Adjoining Atlantic Beach, N.C., near Morehead City, Fort Macon State Park is one of the best preserved old forts in the nation.  This historic fort commands Beaufort Inlet with well preserved gun emplacements, domed rooms, arches and an interesting ditch (moat).
